The 5-minute rule: why speed to lead decides who wins the customer

Speed to lead is the most underrated number in any service business. The company that responds first usually wins the job, and the gap between fast and slow is enormous.

What the research actually says

This is not opinion. It is one of the most replicated findings in sales:

• The Lead Response Management Study (Dr. James Oldroyd, with InsideSales, analyzing more than 15,000 leads) found you are 21 times more likely to qualify a lead if you call within 5 minutes versus 30 minutes.
• Harvard Business Review, in The Short Life of Online Sales Leads, analyzed 2.24 million leads and found firms that responded within an hour were nearly 7 times more likely to have a meaningful conversation than those that waited even one more hour, and 60 times more likely than those that waited 24 hours.
• The same HBR research found the average company took 47 hours to respond, and 23 percent never responded at all.

Read that last point again. Most of your competitors are taking two days. The bar to win is shockingly low: just be fast.

Why businesses lose the race

It is not laziness. A new lead comes in while the owner is on a job, the office manager is on another call, or it is after hours. By the time someone follows up, the prospect has already filled out three other forms and booked the business that called back first.

How to win every time

You cannot ask a human to respond in 60 seconds, 24 hours a day. You can ask AI to:
